Bronx Community Charter School is currently located in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx. The median income for the area is $24,000 and 33% of households are living in poverty, but there is a great richness in the ethnic and cultural life of the community.

 
 

The student population of BxC proudly reflects the ethnic and language diversity of the area. Our families identify as 41% Latino, 31% African-American, 5% African, 6% White, 4% Asian, and 13% Multi-Racial. Our students speak ten home languages, including Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, Bengali, Urdu, Korean, Hausa, Wolof, and Twi. 83% of our students receive free or reduced priced lunch.

 
 

Martha Andrews has been an educator in New York City schools for fifteen years. She taught at P.S. 173 in Manhattan, the Bronx New School/P.S. 51, and Future Leaders Institute Charter School. Alongside her classroom teaching, much of her work focused on documenting and making public the work of classrooms and teachers. She has presented at regional conferences and her work is featured on the National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools and Teaching's on-line materials. Martha did a leadership internship with Morty Ballen at Explore Charter School to learn about charter leadership. She holds a B.A. in Public Policy from Brown University, and an M.A. in Elementary Education from the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University. She is a part of the Educational Leadership Program at Bank Street College, and has been a guest lecturer in graduate courses at Bank Street College and City College.

Sasha Wilson has been an educator in New York City for the past 15 years. He has spent most of that time working with children in the north central Bronx, where he is also a resident and a local parent. He taught for ten years at the Bronx New School/P.S. 51, and held numerous leadership roles including UFT chapter leader and membership on the School Leadership Team and the Personnel Committee. He is a fluent Spanish speaker and was the founding teacher at the Los Chavalitos School in Nicaragua. He did a leadership internship with Allison Keil and Sara Stone at Community Roots Charter School to learn about charter leadership. He holds a B.A. in government from Wesleyan University and an M.S. in Elementary Education from Bank Street College of Education, where he is also a part of the Educational Leadership Program.
